Sleep eBook Infinite Ideas

This book doesn't contain any new insights or tips for getting a perfect night's sleep. However, it does contain standard "sleep hygiene" advice (i.e. don't watch TV or lounge around in bed, make your room as dark as possible for sleeping, etc.).

However, I have to say that many of the sleep hygiene tips can be somewhat anxiety-provoking for someone who suffers from stress-related insomnia because they require fairly stringent time-keeping and meticulous rule following. For people who already have relatively good sleep hygiene, it may actually be counterproductive to add additional sleep hygiene rules to their routine. My doctor actually advised me against going "over the top" with the body clock resetting strategies and the like.

Readers who have never heard of proper sleep hygiene may pick up a few helpful tips from this book, but most chronic insomniacs who have done any reading about insomnia or have gotten any sleep tips from their doctors will probably have already heard and/or tried most of the advice in this book.

great, would order again
this was good
This short little workbook has 10 things to try for improving sleep.

Sleep is so important, and it's not just how much sleep one gets, it is also the quality. Everyone's sleep needs are different. This book doesn't just tell you how to sleep. This book also tells you why you sleep the way you do and how to work with your bodies natural rhythms to improve your rest.

The book is well written and engaging. It is one of a series of five books on the topic. The formatting on the is fine.

I'm probably not giving it as many stars as it deserves, because... well... two things. First, the suggestions are all pretty standard advice that a doctor would give. And second, the main causes of loss of sleep that this book covers are external distractions (noise, light, wrong food, &c.) and over active mind (stress, excitement, &c). The author gives very little attention to other causes.
An easy guide or I would say brief on sleep.

The only point I figured out from the book is record the time and feeling of sleep so that I can review and adjust.

Have a good sleep, dear all.
Sleep is important, but even before the interwebbies, or even telephones, people sometimes have problems getting a good night's rest.

This is a concise overview of ten sleep hygiene habits one should observe. It isn't a bad idea to keep a copy around. If you're having problems sleeping, you can review it and see if you're overlooking something simple.

I would give a copy of this to pre-teens to read and keep on hand, to remind them it's important to get good sleep. It wouldn't hurt, and might help them stick to a bedtime once they're teens.
The author of "Sleep" claims that the real cause of insomnia is stress. And you have to admit that when you can't sleep you feel like your mind won't quit. This book is filled with explanations of how and why we sleep. Here and there the author gives good advice about how to sleep more soundly. Like maybe most people don't know that the drink they take to get to sleep is going to wake them up later in the night. Same with smoking apparently. To top it all off this book reveals that a lack of sleep can speed up ageing. Caffeine could also be a culprit. So there are many clues to your sleeping dilema. The author seems to be from the UK so there is a good helping of British humor which I could appreciate. By reading this book you'll discover something new and maybe be reminded of other things you read but didn't take too seriously. Either way reading this book should give you some ideas on how to beat insomnia.

~The Rebecca Review
This is a short book with a lot of interesting facts about sleep. This book will not cure insomnia, however it has good advice about sleep hygiene and I found some information interesting.

The book contains the following sections

Brilliant features
Introduction
Eyes wide shut
The rhythms of life
Lark or owl?
System failure Six, seven or eight?
The big one Back to basics
Wired!
Noisy nights!
All stressed out!

Sleep hygiene advice starts with helping you to identify the cause of sleep problems such as stress, bad diet, a noisy bedroom environment and so forth. Then it contains some rules to go by. The rules are not ground breaking but a good check list for someone who needs to change their current habits.

I like the summary of stages of sleep from the section "Eyes wide shut"
Stage 1 light sleep.
Which lasts only a few minutes, and a person esily woken.
Stage 2 proper sleep. This phase lasts about 30รป40 minutes, it does not take much to wake a person in this sleep stage, but a person is likely to feel groggy when woken.
Stages 3 and 4 deep sleep. In stage 3 it takes a lot to wake up a person. Your oxygen levels, heart rate and breathing levels are at their lowest. During these stages the growth hormone is released, which helps cell renewal, building new tissue and repairing damaged cells.
Stage 5 REM sleep. This is when you have your most vivid dreams.

I did not know that when a person does not get enough sleep, it is the lighter stages of sleep (stage 1 and 2) that tend to be lost. The body tries to catch up on deep sleep first, then REM sleep.

During the early part of the night you spend more time in non-REM sleep and less time in REM sleep. As the night progresses, sleep is lighter, you wake up more and spend more time in REM sleep. By early morning almost all your sleep is REM sleep which is why you can often remember your dreams at this time rather than the middle of the night.

I also enjoyed the questions following each chapter, here are some examples of questions to which the book has answers

Can you reset your body clock?
Are body clocks genetic?
Does body clock change with the seasons?
Who needs more sleep men or women?
Is too much sleep bad for you?

Overall, I found this book to be a quick read and I learned some facts I did not know before.
